For me, it was a déjà vu of the exact moment when I went grocery shopping at Pick and Pay, and for the first time, I no longer had to buy nappy packs, after 12/13 years of changing and buying nappies. ( I need to mention that I am blessed with four healthy children.) It led to a complete change in lifestyle and a reset of responsibilities.
And now, another area that is nearly over. I am getting close to having an empty nest—a sweet and sad moment.
On the one hand, the mission was accomplished in raising them to become independent, happy, and responsible adults. It was not an easy journey with tough backdrops like divorce, little money, etc. And yet, when I look at photos of all the precious and joyful memories made, I feel a deep sense of nostalgia and look forward to the days of grandchildren.
But wait!
There is a chapter between having children in the nest and waiting for grandchildren. It is the YOU-chapter! It is a chapter of recreating and invigorating your life, yourself, and a time to rise to the occasion and do the things you could never do before: a new freedom, accompanied by a bouquet of opportunities.
Do you know how to change gears?
Most important to me was to work with the understanding that my children need to be set free to write their own book in life’s journey, and to simultaneously strike a balance in having an enjoyable relationship with them.
Having four children, of whom two will be married soon, I realized that there is no generic recipe for this, except that each child will have a unique and different gear and relationship with me.
I have decided that the new phase will be an adventure with a refreshing new blank canvas, where I have a chance to redesign my life, incorporating some familiar elements like my children and work, but with new vibrant colours and a different landscape.
I have made a list of things I want to do, enjoy, and still accomplish. (I noticed that I need to set aside time even to make the list, and it takes time, as it is a significant project.
Some of my new colours are:
Redecorating and declutter
Re-vamp my routine and lifestyle
Prioritize relationships with a fresh look
Dotting of Experiences that I still want to encounter
Listening more to music by choice
Learning new skills and topics of my interest
Brain exercises and fun games
More baking and cooking new recipes
Being thankful each night before I sleep, and counting my blessings
Travel
Joining interest groups
And lots more
Enjoy your YOU-chapter!
